Getting There: Directions to the Adirondack Loj Road

From downtown Lake Placid: Head south on Main Street. At the stop light, turn RIGHT onto Sentinel Road, just before the Sunoco Gas Station. Continue onto NY-73 E/Cascade Road. Drive 2.7 miles. At the sign for "High Peaks Wilderness Area via South Meadows and Adirondack Loj Trailheads," turn RIGHT onto Adirondack Loj Road. The main butterfly area is the first 1¼ miles of the road from the intersection of the Adirondack Loj Road and Cascade Road to just before the narrow bridge over North Meadow Brook. There are places to pull over safely at convenient points along both sides of the road.

From Saranac Lake and points northwest: From the outskirts of Saranac Lake, take the Sara-Placid Road (NY-86E) toward Lake Placid. Drive for 4.9 miles. When you see a big green road sign advising you to bear right for Keene, turn RIGHT onto Old Military Road (Essex County Route 35). Merge onto NY-73 E. The Lake Placid Horse Show Grounds will be on your left. Drive for 1.7 miles on NY-73 East (Cascade Road). At the sign for "High Peaks Wilderness Area via South Meadows and Adirondack Loj Trailheads," turn RIGHT onto Adirondack Loj Road. The main butterfly area is the first 1¼ miles of the road from the intersection of the Adirondack Loj Road and Cascade Road to just before the narrow bridge over North Meadow Brook. From Keene Valley and points southeast: From Keene Valley, head northwest on NY-73 W. Drive 15.6 miles. At the sign for "High Peaks Wilderness Area via South Meadows and Adirondack Loj Trailheads," turn LEFT onto Adirondack Loj Road. The main butterfly area is the first 1¼ miles of the road from the intersection of the Adirondack Loj Road and Cascade Road to just before the narrow bridge over North Meadow Brook. There are places to pull over safely at convenient points along both sides of the road.
