Getting There: Directions to the Heart Lake Trail
From downtown Lake Placid: Head south on Main Street. At the stop light, turn RIGHT onto Sentinel Road, just before the Sunoco Gas Station. Continue onto NY-73 E/Cascade Road. Drive 2.7 miles. At the sign for "High Peaks Wilderness Area via South Meadows and Adirondack Loj Trailheads," turn RIGHT onto Adirondack Loj Road. Drive for 4.7 miles. The parking booth for the trails is located at the end of the Adirondack Loj Road. There is a trailhead parking fee. The daily rate is $5 for members of the Adirondack Mountain Club and $10 for nonmembers. After 1 PM, the rate is $2.50 for members and $5 for nonmembers. If the parking attendant is not present, fill out the back of an envelop from the self-service box and deposit it in the slot.
From Saranac Lake and points northwest: From the outskirts of Saranac Lake, take the Sara-Placid Road (NY-86E) toward Lake Placid. Drive for 4.9 miles. When you see a big green road sign advising you to bear right for Keene, turn RIGHT onto Old Military Road (Essex County Route 35). Merge onto NY-73 E. The Lake Placid Horse Show Grounds will be on your left. Drive for 1.7 miles on NY-73 East (Cascade Road). At the sign for "High Peaks Wilderness Area via South Meadows and Adirondack Loj Trailheads," turn RIGHT onto Adirondack Loj Road. Drive for 4.7 miles.
